Creating a recipe box
Recipes can be a very important part of a family's history. One of my favorite memories of child hood is watching my mother and grand-mother create wonderful home cooked meals. I would follow them around the kitchen, trying to watch every little ingredient that they were putting into the meal they were making. If you can believe it, I would even try to memorize things, so that one day I could learn to be a wonderful cook like them!
My mother and grand-mother have both passed away several years ago, but one of the things that I treasure the most are our family recipes. When my mother passed away, my father came to visit me one cloudy afternoon. He held in his hand a little silver box. I knew that box, I had seen it many times. It was the coveted silver box that held my family recipes. From that moment on, it became one of my most prized possessions.
One special thing that I would recommend that everyone do is create a recipe box. It does not have to be fancy, remember it's the recipes inside that are the real treasure. Making a recipe box is very simple! All that is needed is a set of nice index cards and a box to keep them in. Hand writing the recipes on the cards makes the box even more personal. You can use small tabs to organize the recipes into categories, such as desserts, main dishes, and sides. It will only take a small amount of time to create your personal recipe box, but the memories of your wonderful cooking will last a life time!
